Try to discuss the following points with the presenter before the interpreting assignment begins:
- Will a video, slides or projector be used?
- Will there be technical vocabulary or jargon used in the speech? - Check the meanings.
- Will anything be read verbatim?
- Will the audience be encouraged to participate?
- Has the speaker used an interpreter before?
It may be useful to check the following:
- Screen or backdrop behind the platform.
- Windows/blinds/curtains and lighting.
- Microphones/amplification - loop system?
- Positioning of interpreters.
- Positioning of speakers and delegates.
- Reserved seating for Deaf users?
Other considerations:
- Who is chairing the session for which you will be interpreting?
- Will the interpreters be introduced at the beginning of the conference, and if so by whom and what will be said?
- Is there an interpreter co-ordinator? Who is it and do you know where they will be?
- What backup and support arrangements are there for you and your colleagues?
- Have you discussed schedules and timings for the interpreters?
- Are the interpreters required at registration?
- Will the interpreters be required at lunchtime? Is there a rota for this?
- Are there any ‘house rules’ that the interpreters need to know?
- Do you know where the rest rooms are, and where to find refreshments?
